Drawing – More Portrait Progress
I’ve done about 3 sessions on my portrait since last time. Here was the result of the first (or second):
Not a ton of progress, but got another eye in there, woohoo! And hey look, a nose!
And the next, where I actually zoom out so you can see who I’m drawing. Of course, it’s Joseph Gordon-Levitt! At this point I gave him some major facial reconstruction as nothing was where it was supposed to be or the right size. So some of the nice details I had got messed up in the cutting and moving and resizing:
This was a tough part, because the more I stared at it, well.. the more he started to look like George W. Bush, haha. I think it’s just the hairline/forehead and the ears.. and because his eyes are a little squinty in the photo. Curse you Bush for having features that have been so exaggerated in all of your caricatures as to make anyone with even the tiniest bit of those features resemble yoooou! Curses!
And here’s what I got done today!:

Woohoo! I think it’s looking pretty good. I really like to flip back and forth between this one and the previous one. I’m starting to be ok with where all the features are and I started finalizing the details a bit, like between his nose and mouth. I stepped back compared it to the reference picture a bit afterwards and it looks like I still need to thin out his jawline a bit. JGL has a petite face!
This drawing has been so so so fun and satisfying and not frustrating at all. Well, except parts when I realize things are in the wrong places, or if I realize that but cant seem to get them right. I’m hesitant to actually like.. overlay the reference onto my work and move things around that way, that seems a little bit too much like cheating. I am pulling all my shades and colors from the reference image though, haha. Oh well, I need to practice these things! And if I expect too much from myself I’ll get totally frustrated sooooo… cheating all the way!
