Inspiration: Red Tugboat House
“I’ve got really bad news,” I told my husband as I put on my seatbelt after work yesterday, “I found my dream house for sale.” I have a bad habit of getting all excited about things I can’t have yet, and this was one of those cases! I was searching for tiny houses, just to see what the price ranges were and get an idea of how long we’ll have to wait before we’re able to buy one. I caught a little bit of house fever from my friend Sada, who pointed out that our monthly rent money could be going towards a mortgage instead. I’m really missing playing piano lately, but I don’t think our apartment neighbors would take too kindly to that. I know Nick gets nervous every time he plays Rock Band drums, worried that he’s bothering the people below us. Plus, I’d love to just have a space that is totally my own to use and decorate! I think most people just naturally want to own a house at some point in their lives.
So anyway, I was kind of giving up on finding cute houses in my search, nothing was really turning up in the lower price range, and then I saw this:
It looks like a little red tugboat! I flipped out! The deck wraps around 3/4 of the house, and up on top is a balcony that takes up half the first floor! It was built the year I was born, which I took to be a sign. It’s only about the same square footage as our apartment, but it has a brand new little red shop out back. Everything about it just seems so perfect! It’s tiny and cozy, but has a full bedroom, full bath, and a kitchen with a dishwasher and stove. It says it has an office, too, which I’m guessing is what is in the little half second floor. And the shop out back would be a dream come true. It could serve as extra storage space if we needed, but more likely would become a craft workshop for me!
I told Nick all about it, and we were both all excited, even though we can’t really buy right now, but then we looked at the map together and Nick informed me it was on the busiest, most ridiculous road that exists on his way to work. Plus it would about double our driving time even though it’s physically closer to both of our jobs, just because of the way the roads are built and the way the traffic flows.
So farewell, adorable red tugboat house that looks like it could have been in Myst or something. It wasn’t meant to be. But I sure am glad funny little houses like you exist!

haha aww who DOESN’T get excited over things they can’t have yet! This is adorable, I can’t believe it even exists! And oh man, a craft workshop! That’d be so neat!
Do you have a long contract with your apartment, or are you two looking to move to a house as soon as you can? I’ve always thought about that same issue too…all that money going to monthly rent on an apartment you’ll likely give up later could be invested in a house that could be really be yours! Well, good luck in your continued search!
I’m still crazy about this little house! I wonder who built it… they must have loved it!
We have a 13-month contract, so we’re still in this apt until January 2011 =) The great thing about our apartment is we got it at a really good price for this area, and it’s really close to both of our jobs. I think we’ll have a hard time finding a better apartment closer to our work for anywhere near the same price…and the houses that are close are way out of our budget, so in that sense, I guess our rent is going towards living in a great location, so it’s not so bad =) I think I’ll be able to last a long time before I go crazy with house fever…. as long as I can find somewhere to play piano!
