Art: Mindi Leatham Cut Paper Art
Have I fallen off the blog wagon already? I think I just wasn’t prepared for daily posts yet. I have a lot of drafts in the works, and topics to write about, I just haven’t prioritized it. Life got in the way a couple times, and I’ve been exhausted from work. Hopefully I’ll be able to get back in the swing of it!
Today’s post features a really inspiring crafter/artist named Mindi. I can’t remember how I found her work, but I think it was while browsing Flickr for something at work. Mindi does watercolor, illustrations, and home-made accessories, but my favorites are her cut paper art pieces. This Superman one was what caught my eye, and I find it particularly inspiring! I love when people take iconic characters and re-imagine them!
A lot of Mindi’s other paper creations are of super cute, super stylized little characters! These definitely appeal to the anime fan in me. The designs are so adorable and I love the way Mindi uses so many different prints and papers. The overall effect is that of a simple, cute character, but as you look closer you see that the whole piece is actually very complex and intricate! She must have a lot of patience and attention to detail considering how beautiful her creations turn out! I had to make a few hundred little cut paper Easter chicks for Easter cards once at the company I used to work for, and between my hand cramping up from the scissors and me accidentally cutting off little Easter chick feet and feathers here and there, it was all I could do to affix them to the cards, much less add a cute paper background/border and tiny accent pieces!
If you want to see more of Mindi’s work, you can check out her Flickr page, or her blog where you can also see the creation process of some of her beautiful pieces!

Wow, talk about gorgeous! Creative people are creative. Sigh.
I love this one: http://mindileatham.com/2009/09/finished.html
Really makes me want to do an arts & crafts workshop. Speaking of, ARTS & CRAFTS are a huge part of every SUMMER CAMP. Oh gosh, a re-imagined Sherlock Holmes or Professor Layton would look SO CUTE in Mindi’s style.
That one was super cute too! Can you imagine cutting out all the little notches in those feathers though? Talk about patience!
Hahaha, arts and crafts are a must for any successful summer camp! How about recreating famous Da Vinci paintings while investigating the positioning and ratio of all the objects for hidden meanings? Hahaha.
I actually saw an image that was a clay model picture of a man in a top hat running across a clock with gears in the back, TOTALLY reminded me of Layton. I’ll be posting it here later on!
Hi Natalie,
Thanks for the really nice post! I’m so glad you like my art.
No problem, Mindi! You’re very talented =)
